The Annual Gala of the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food will take place on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm at the New York Academy of Medicine, 1216 5th Avenue on the corner of 103rd Street.  For more information and to buy tickets, go to www.healthyschoolfood,org/events.htm.  The Gala promises to be an evening of good music, delicious food, and great company!

I have a special connection to the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food because I met Aimee Hamlin, the Executive Director 9 years ago on a trip to Alaska for a group of vegans from all over the country.  Aimee organized the trip.  We stayed at Bed and Breakfasts and small Inns most of the time.  It was a truly inspiring trip.  At the time, I had been single forever and had no prospects of getting married any time soon.  However, the trip made such an impression on me that I met my wife Pamela shortly afterward.  I give credit to Aimee for putting the trip together and for helping me to make a dramatic shift in my attitude about meeting the right person.

In any case, the gala looks like it will be a really awesome event.  Efforts to make school food more healthy have been long in coming but are finally coming to fruition here in New York City and all over the country.  Childhood obesity, diabetes, and other diseases are at epidemic proportions while most schools continue to serve the cheapest, least nutritious, least fresh, and least healthy food they can buy.  The New York Coalition for Healthy School Food has made enormous strides in reversing this situation and more and more schools are offering fresh, vegetarian, vegan, wholesome, food that is nutritious and delicious.

So I hope you will join me in supporting the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food.  Maybe, I’ll see you at the Gala!
